Could you imagine J.Crew without Jenna Lyons? Most likely, the answer would be "hell no." And rightly so—Lyons plays an important role in the retailer's success. Mickey Drexler certainly knows this—he did name her president of the company.

But according to Lyons, she was scared Drexler would fire her when they first met. As the story goes, Drexler told Lyons to go through the women's collection and asked her what she thought about the garments. Lyons was honest and pointed out what she did and didn't like, the latter including a million-dollar selling sweater.

"I didn't know if I was going to be fired," Lyons told Fast Company. "I was so confused, and I was scared, but I was also a little bit excited, because all the things that I liked and that I thought were brand-right he was leaving up on the wall. And I was like, Is that good, is that bad? I don't know."

Clearly, it was a good great sign.
