Google Art Project has over 200 partners from 44 countries worldwide, and is now joined by four New York City institutes: the Center for Jewish History, Museum of the City of New York, Museum of the Moving Image, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Joining others already participating in the program such as the Museum of Modern Art, selected works from their collections will be uploaded and made available for viewing online. The initiative makes it possible for online visitors to browse through over 40,000 high-resolution images by artist or collection and to compare artworks by viewing them side-by-side. Google Art Project also offers virtual tours of the museums themselves, as the Museum View feature makes use of Street View technology and takes users through actual floorplans.
Michael Glickman, chief operating officer at the Center for Jewish History, said about the project, “The idea for us to gain greater access and exposure, being able to introduce the public to broad spectrum of what we have here, is something we found quite compelling."
