Twenty-three years later, the FBI announced that they have identified the thieves responsible for the biggest art heist to date. The vandals, who are believed to be a part of a larger criminal organization, stole 13 works (now valued at $500 million) from Boston's Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in 1990. While it's helpful that the authorities have identified the thieves, the location of the Degas, Vermeer, and Rembrandt works they stole is still unknown.
Art heists aren't going away, as museums worldwide strive to improve their security measures. It's a relief to know that even after all this time, there's hope for recovering lost works.
