Nothing in particular about Jo Ann Callis' photos seems threatening, but something in her use of lighting and color gives her frames a beautifully menacing atmosphere. As she places goldfish swimming alongside green beans in a kitchen sink, sets a plate on fire, then presents us with alternate views of tabletops, we wonder as much as the parrot does in observing a boat in a bathtub. Her photographs are reminiscent of scenes from an old movie, and regardless of their occasionally strange subjects, are comforting to gaze upon.
