When the deadly tsunami swept through Japan two years ago, an 88-foot pine tree was the only remaining tree in a forest of 70,000 others that were decimated on the coast in Rikuzentakata, Iwate prefecture. The tree stood for nearly 18 months before succumbing to the high levels of saline introduced to the environment. A monument will be made for the the miracle pine as a symbol of perseverance.
