Paris-based artist Claire Fontaine made an installation in 2011 called U.S.A. (burnt/unburnt). The work is a map of the United States made out of thousands of green matches that she pushed into a wall at the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art. She has made a name for herself by making these match geographies, which are astonding even if they went wrong just once.
