New York City has always been a hallmark of the American experience. However, photographerCamilo José Vergara shows us that New York has not always stood at its current glory. From 1970-1973, amid the Vietnam War, a harsh economy, and days before developed technology as we know it today, much of New York was dilapidated and abandoned. Exploring the ghetto neighborhoods, Vergara was able to discover the vibrancy and culture amongst the destruction. Vergarda says that his aim was to, "capture essences that transcended time, personal names and physical space."
