The pseudo-garage rock movement of the early 2000s went two ways—you either had the mod tendencies of groups like The Hives, or neo-greaser acolytes like Julian Casablancas. Skinny jeans, tight leather jackets, and unwashed, long hair was the look, and he had it down to a T. The look was "Williamsburg hipster" years before the term became a pejorative about anyone or anything remotely alt reviving the downtown appeal of the Lower East Side, The Strokes got their start at the Arlene's Grocery venue, and you can still spot an odd Strokes T-shirt at spots like Max Fish and Piano's today.
