The Austere Look of the Law

Police Station by Josep Ferrando Bramona and Sergi Serrat.

This new Police Station, designed by architects Josep Ferrando Bramona and Sergi Serrat, aims to look accessible and open. Does it succeed?

Located in the Salt, Spain, the white building may differ drastically from the typical police structure, but comes off like a modernist fortress rather than a bastion of public support. Public and private spaces, thankfully, are firmly separated. A surrounding grove of beech trees offers some natural comfort, but we're still not totally swayed. This building, for all it wishes to be, still strikes fear in us.
