Portfolio Review: Photographer Kevin Morosky Shares His Favorite Portraits

In anticipation of his upcoming online exhibition Start a War, photographer Kevin Morosky has shared some of his favorite portraits with us. His images have been featured in i-D, The Guardian, Dazed & Confused, Vice, NYLON, The Fader, Dummy, Time Out New York, and Metro, and he's shot musicians like Jack Penate, Jessie Ware, and Lianne la Havas. 

In discussing the exhibition, Morosky says, “When you break up with someone you have forgotten what and who you were before them. You merge to a point where everything that came before is almost a myth.” He was inspired by a song of the same name by new wave pop duo, We The Committee.

In speaking of his work as a whole, Morosky says, “I never try to create a picture, I never have. The perfect shot is all about waiting and capturing a moment, a feeling.” Click through our latest Portfolio Review to see the work that defines him.

"Ashley has been my best friend since '97. Back then, we worked in McDonalds and dreamed/planned big. This picture was taken on the way to a charity function hosted by Russell Simmons in 2010. We ended up sitting at the head table with Russell along side Michelle from Destiny's Child. Fancy parties and gatherings do not equal success, but I love this picture, because for me it depicts how far we've come."

"Harry saw Leomie for the first time while watching the Channel 4 documentary series The Model Agency. He turned to his mother and declared that Leomie was the girl he wanted to marry. After much e-stalking, Harry managed to woo Leomie via Twitter. They have been together ever since. Harry’s mum is still in shock."

"I had decided to crash at a (then) friend's house. She and her ex a.k.a. "not over each other yet" friend were saying good night. After I had half-passed out on the sofa bed, I grabbed my camera and captured him pulling a face that referenced something only she knew or understood, and she smiled. It made me think sometimes we only encounter love after the break-up."

"I kept hearing about this DJ called Oneman, and one night I finally got to hear him play and was introduced to him. Something seemed very familiar about him. It wasn't for another 2 or 3 months after other chance meetings, that we both realized we'd actually worked together over 10 years ago at Levis. He's one of the best DJs in the world."

"Just after this was taken, we got out of the pool, and this thunder storm erupted. I changed the film, and we jumped back in the pool while it was thundering and lightning and the rain poured. When we got out, the camera exploded, and we realized that playing in a pool under a very violent storm was very stupid. The pictures would have been amazing though."
