Twenty years ago, NYC was bubbling. The burgeoning global art world was employing the new tools of digital information, and artists were responding to a plethora of cultural turning points—Conflict in Europe, the AIDS crisis, gun control, gay rights, and caustic partisan politics.

Next February, the New Museum will explore this explosive moment in art history through NYC 1993: Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star. "Centering on the year 1993," states the museum, "the exhibition is conceived as a time capsule, an experiment in collective memory that attempts to capture a specific moment at the intersection of art, pop culture, and politics." The exhibition subtitle draws from the eponymous album of New York band Sonic Youth, recorded in 1993 and emblematic of the crossing of underground cultures that define the era.

Artists presented in the exhibition include: Ida Applebroog, Art Club 2000, Alex Bag, Matthew Barney, Kathe Burkhart, John Currin, Coco Fusco, Robert Gober, Nan Goldin, Félix González-Torres, Ann Hamilton, David Hammons, On Kawara, Byron Kim, Alix Lambert, Sean Landers, Sarah Lucas, Paul McCarthy, Suzanne McClelland, Gabriel Orozco, Pepón Osorio, Elizabeth Peyton, Steven Pippin, Charles Ray, Jason Rhoades, Julia Scher, Andres Serrano, Cindy Sherman, Rudolf Stingel, Wolfgang Tillmans, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Nari Ward, Hannah Wilke, Jack Whitten. A fully illustrated catalogue will complement the installation.

Curated by Massimiliano Gioni, Associate Director and Director of Exhibitions, Gary Carrion-Murayari, Curator, Jenny Moore, Associate Curator, and Margot Norton, Curatorial Associate, NYC 1993 will run from February 13 through May 26, 2013.
