Tomorrow morning, Doyle New York will host its inaugural street art auction. Touted as "the first of its kind in New York and the United States," the sale includes work by Shepard Fairey, Barry McGee, Steven Powers, KAWS, Todd James, and, of course, Banksy. The material spans from the 1980s through to the present day, providing a neat overview of the street art scene through recent decades.
Street art has done well at auctions in London, particularly at Phillips de Pury, and street art and graffiti works have sold well at contemporary art auctions around the world. It will be interesting to see if New York's art market will embrace and sustain the niche.
