Italian photographer Gughi Fassinobecame obsessed with the contemporary architecture and design of the Halden prison in Norway, and he set out to do a photo story about it. He discovered that the prisoners take computer, woodworking, cooking, and music classes during the day. Amenities include forest jogging trails, flat-screen TVs, and private showers, causing Fassino to note that it seemed “almost too relaxed for a prison.”

Since prisoners in Norway go back into society, the aim of the prison is to create a well-designed space for rehabilitation and growth. Perhaps it works, since only 20% of prisoners return to prison in Norway, which is much less than the 50-60% in the U.S.
