Originally designed by Louis Kahn in 1974, FDR Four Freedoms Park will finally open this week on NYC's Roosevelt Island. The park suffered from economic setback until the release of the film My Architect reignited interest in Kahn's visionary architecture. A group of private investors and local firm Mitchell Giurgola Architects brought the project to fruition and the city now boasts a new monument to the 32nd President.
Visitors to the park will follow a white granite plinth to an open courtyard housing a 28-inch bronze bust of FDR by Jo Davidson. The sculpture faces the United Nations and is engraved on the backside with the text from the four freedoms speech, delivered by FDR on January 6, 1941 and outlining essential freedoms for "everyone in the world."
