EASTERN DESIGN's Tower of Ring Befuddles Chinese Viewers

Is it a building or a sculpture?

Tower of Ring. This is design that questions function. Questions reality. Questions just WTF?!?! we're looking at.

Built of cast-steel, the structure dominates a new cultural square in Tianjin, China. Visitors are forced to ponder if they can enter. They can't. Can they climb it? No, not that either. They are forced to look into the sky, and to connect city and wider world.

The Japanese firm behind the tower, EASTERN DESIGN, describes the structure as "a void space and emptiness, which has no sense of presence." The Tower of Ring's power comes in subverting our typical associations with modern skyscraper or ornamental monument. This is design based on ideas. And, also, based on the idea of promoting new ideas.
