The Art of Hair: Frivolities and Trophies opened last week at the Musée du Quai Branly in Paris, celebrating the universal importance of hair in art, fashion, style, ritual, sexuality, religion, and culture. It features photographs of actresses like Ava Gardner, Gina Lollobrigida, and Brigitte Bardot, in addition to slide shows and short films showing hair's influence and controversy from antiquity to today.
In the words of curator Yves Le Fur, “Hair has no fixed meaning. It can show the norm and the anti-establishment, conformity and anti-conformity, seduction and repulsion, freedom and repression. It’s the only human material that can be shaped and distorted as you wish.”
The Art of Hair is on view now through July 14, 2013.
