As sideways baseball hats wane from the spotlight, other options for a bro’s chapeau emerge, such as the now commonplace fedora or the traditional skull cap. The most important thing to think about is your head (not surprisingly). If you have a big noggin but are wearing a tiny hat, people are either going to think you’re a goofball or that you have gigantism. At the same time, if your hat is too loose and falling over your eyes like some little leaguer, no one’s going to take you seriously. Spend some time figuring out the best size and style for your noodle. You’ll be glad that you did.

There was a time when sneakers of any sort were absolutely prohibited in the club scene. That policy still applies at many establishments, though not all, so know before you go whether that pair of rubber-soled kicks will get you turned away at the door. Also, if you’re planning on doing the Dougie, make sure you strike the right balance between style and comfort with your footwear. While you should by all means get down with your bad self, calluses and blisters that leave you barely able to walk aren’t going to help your cause with the ladies.

These days, a lot of dudes forego a watch entirely, and instead just check the time on their cell phone. But a good watch was never just a time-telling tool. In fact, it’s probably the most important accessory choice guys have (ascots aside). It used to be that the truest sign of upscale manliness (at least when it came to what was on your wrist) was a certain Swiss brand. The only reason you need to pull your phone out all night is to add some pretty young thing’s digits.

It seems that a lot of the people you see wearing glasses have no ocular deficiency whatsoever. People sport decorative specs even if their vision is 20/20 (sometimes with no lenses, just frames). But be mindful about the spectacles you choose. The Clark Kent or Truman Capote vibe is chic, but looking like Milton from Office Space? Simply terrifying. And avoid bifocals, for God’s sake. Who are you, Ben Franklin?

While the 80s saw plenty of people sporting stiff blazers as casual attire, sport coats (as your mom might have called them) have come back into fashion (these days likely worn over a t-shirt in lieu of a loose, white collared shirt). But don’t be bogged down by the notion that the blazer is the only outerwear option available. Spice it up with a more casual, retro look like a vintage varsity jacket. Sure, you might have sucked at sports in high school, but you can finally make your letterman dreams come true.
