After the earthquake of March 2011, Japanese architect Shigeru Ban created the Onagawa Temporary Container Housing and Community Center to shelter affected families. The site has difficult terrain, with a scarcity of flat land, so Ban designed a resolution that incorporated several three-story structures built by stacking 20-foot shipping containers and an open air market covered by tentsile roof. It is a remarkable achievement of sustainable architecture, and a reminder that utilitarian objects can combine to form beautiful environments.
