Once upon a time, Barack Obama was a normal college student attending Columbia University in NYC, living on the Upper West Side, and paying $360 a month for a tiny room. That time was 1981, and in 2012, the apartment's rent is $2,400 a month. Like many imperfect Manhattan walk-ups, it has a galley kitchen, a 7x9-foot bedroom, a buzzer that doesn't work, and five locks on the door.
