As long as I've been buying my own underwear (love you, mom) I've taken the easy route with the quickness—hit up Target, leave with a bunch of Hanes or Fruit of the Loom joints and a $3.99 copy of Space Jam on DVD. When you fuss over your clothing like a little girl as much as I do there's no time to fuss over your fucking underwear. No holes? Chuch. Move on. Well, recently my entire perspective on this shit got its script flipped. See, sometimes when you write about clothing on the information superhighway enough, brands get tricked into thinking you are important and send you samples of whatever it is they are selling. 99% of the time the shit is so bad you don't want it in the first place, but that 1%, oh man, is it sweet. My latest 1% victory came in the form of Sunspel, the English brand known for making menswear basics. In my care package was a polo shirt, a tee and, wait for it, a pair of drawers. In fact, they were the nicest pair of drawers I had ever laid eyes on. But just because a pair of underroos feels nice in your hands doesn't mean it's going to jive with your situation. I had this buddy in college who swore by Gold Bond. His pitch? "Bro, it feels like 1,000 tiny elves blowing on your nuts." Based on that highly scientific metric of comfortability, wearing Sunspel boxers feels like 479 tiny elves blowing on your nuts. Not to shabby, right? For Sunspel it all comes down to the fabric. You can read about all that boring shit on their website. Because I am a responsible journalist, I should mention that wearing Sunspel boxers does come with an occupational hazard. One member of the female species (the only one in my life who currently sees me in my underwear) practically laughed me out of the room when she saw them for the first time. She said they looked like regal underwear from the 1800's, which I not only consider a compliment, but makes total sense since Sunspel has been supporting bulges since 1860. Royal man panties will run you $29-$39.
