Youth and life online are two intermingling themes in the Alex Gartenfeld curated Too Old For Toys, Too Young For Boys exhibition now on view at LA's OHWOW. The collected works challenge the ideas of the teen image and how it has changed in an internet world. How do adults view children now? How do children interact with adults? Gartenfeld is inspired by two essays, Sean Price's "Teen Image" and Charlie White's "Minor Threat," both of which discuss these crucial issues.
The exhibition includes powerful art by Josh Kline, who photoshops two celebrities of two generations, and Aura Rosenburg, who asks other artists to create portraits of children. Also included are videos by Ronnie Bass, sculpture by Debo Eilers, and photographs by Jay Heikes and Barney Kulok.
The material, no doubt, is challenging and sometimes alarming. But, overall, it serves to question how we navigating the difficulty of appropriate interaction in a digital age.
