Honolulu holds a special place in the history of American tattooing. The port city was home to Sailor Jerry, who played no small role in solidifying popular iconography and expanding color schemes, as well as a local centuries-old Polynesian tradition. Both sides of the tattoo story are told in Tattoo Honolulu, a new exhibition that places tattooing in a fine art context. The Honolulu Academy of Fine Arts highlights tattooing's foundations and links works of art in the collection to contemporary tattoos by master's working in the city today.

Tattoo Honolulu runs through January 13, 2013.
