With over 2 million visitors per year, the Tate Modern decided it was time to expand. They chose legendary architects Herzog and de Meuron to enlarge the gallery space by 70%, which includes "The Tanks" — underground former oil tanks. Fascinated with the history of the space, Herzog and de Meuron explain that, “From the beginning, Tate’s and our objective for this new project has been to fuse the extension with the power station’s past and history, so that like the original conversion, it would always refer back to the building as it once was, which was rough and industrial.

The Tanks will be a space for live and performance art with a focus on work without physical form. [Archdaily]
