Altered States, an exhibition of new painting, sculpture, and installation by American artist Valerie Hegarty depicts destruction as a point of historic examination. What does that mean? Essentially, Hegarty re-produces furniture and painting from the American colonial era and then burns or otherwise mutilates the finished product. In doing so, she forms powerful narratives that question repression, progress, and rebirth. Click the thumbs to check out examples.

Altered States runs through May 5, 2012.
