There are roughly 13,659 payphones on New York City streets. Contrast that with the over 17 million cell phones in use. Yup, you guessed it, payphones are nearly obsolete.

Architect John Locke has a plan. As part of his "Department of Urban Betterment," Locke installs machine-shelves into the interiors of phone booths. Once newly equipped, the booths become community libraries, opportunities to share with neighbors and gather as a community. [Design Taxi]
