Replacing the current Vincent Calderon Stadium, opened in 1966, Atletico Madrid's new Estadio La Peinta home is getting a full makeover. Built in the 1990s, the stadium was originally prepared as a 20,000 capacity track and field venue. With hopes of securing the 2020 Olympic bid, Madrid will add just over 45,000 seats and allow for a quick adaptation for non-soccer activity. Detractors of the project point to location (much further from the City center than Atletico's existing field) and the awkward mix of oval and rectangular shapes.
