Nike is known for launching its top-tier soccer boots in crazy colors, and when the Mercurial Vapor SuperFly II boot launched in bright purple for the World Cup, we were impressed. For the newest version of the boot, the Cristiano Ronaldo signature edition (CR Mercurial Vapor SuperFly II), Nike modernized the ostrich-skin print originally designed by Tinker Hatfield for the Air Safari pack in 1987. As the precursor to the Jordan III elephant print, Safari fabric has gained classic status in sneakerhead lore. Like the other bright Mercurials, designers claim this boot helps players see the wearer in their peripheral vision—a chevron pattern overlay on the material catches the light when running, which creates a flash to help players pick up their teammates.
