Friday Faceoff: SlamxHype & Complex Debate The 5 Best Spring 2009 Clothing Lines

In this week's faceoff, we discuss the season's best labels with our New Zealand streetwear friends.

Each week in the Friday Faceoff, the editors of Complex will have an open debate with one of the other websites in the Complex Media Network on a timely topic. We encourage everyone to chime in with comments about our choices, whether you agree or disagree. Don't worry, we can take a sneak-diss or two.

Last week, we hit up our homies at OnSMASH and got into a tough debate about Eminem's best videos. This week, we're stepping back into the streetwear/fashion arena for a back-and-forth with our brothers from Slamxhype.com to point out our five favorite Spring/Summer collections. Read on to see who made the cut, and what labels you should be up on for the new season...

acronym-lead
SLAMXHYPE #5 PICK: ACRONYM

Slamxhype Says: Errolson Hugh's high tech outerwear brand is possibly one of the most influential brands in the world today. It's brought back an interest in technical function and quality. Whether it's winter or summer, Acronym's Outerwear is bar none, the best in every aspect. If it's too hot for a jacket this season, the accessories and technical bags from this collection are unbeatable too.
Complex says: This was a good pick, in the technical "arena" Acronym is high up on our list as well. The cool-guy who's into technical clothing is wearing this in the states.

bblessing
COMPLEX #5 PICK: BbLESSING

Complex Says: This collection is for a style-forward guy. It's a little risky but it's still masculine. If you're comfortable in your skin and are willing to branch out, get up on them. Think classic pieces like Polo and Ralph Lauren Black Label , and stepping it up a notch.
Slamxhype Says: Every season Bblessing do some of the best shirts and jackets, this season is no different, the woodsman shirt and trench coat are amazing. My only dislike is the tees, a little hipster for me.

casely-halford
SLAMXHYPE #4 PICK: CASELY-HAYFORD

Slamxhype says: A big reason why I am so into un-tailored sportswear inspired fashion, is that, to create well-cut tailored garments it takes years of experience and knowledge, something only a handful of people can possibly hold. Imagine if you could combine that kind of knowledge with a new generation of aesthetics and street knowledge. Former Creative Director of Savile Row's Gieves & Hawkes has combined with his son Charlie to launch 'Casely-Hayford' and in their first collection they killed it!
Complex says: This is a smart collection, kind of like Hugo Boss we'd say. I think our consumer would go for something a bit more affordable, and in the U.S you can't find this label anywhere.

3sixteenlead11
COMPLEX #4 PICK: 3SIXTEEN

Complex Says: It was interesting to see what labels successfully made the transformation from t-shirt brand, to a well-rounded clothing brand. 3Sixteen is one of the few labels that stepped its game up tremendously in the last couple of years. When it comes to dope knits, and denim don't expect them to fall off anytime soon.
Slamxhype Says: A few years ago there was a huge influx of tee shirt labels, then came the movement of those who were successful branching into cut and sew. To be honest not many have achieved this well, but 3sixteen have gone far and beyond. Without a doubt one of the best streetwear brands today. The brand has grown with its fans and this collection a testament to that, especially the jackets..

adamkimmel-lead
SLAMXHYPE #3 PICK: ADAM KIMMEL

Slamxhype Says:I saw an interview with Yohji Yamamoto where the Japanese designer was asked what made good menswear. He simply said that a well dressed man shouldn't be noticed. For years Margiela's menswear line has been the benchmark for understated quality, finally someone arrives to test that mark.
Complex Says: We like this line, it's a very mature-looking collection. It's like Yohji's cleaned-up line, not the more sportswear line that is, Y-3.

stussy-lead
COMPLEX #3 PICK: STUSSY DELUXE

Complex Says: How could you not love this brand? They continue to re-invent themselves and its spring/summer line is one of their strongest to date. The short-sleeved button-ups pop, and we'd mess with the accessories like the Fedoras.
Slamxhype Says: Stussy means a lot to me, as it does to anyone who understands where street fashion came from. Deluxe is made to the highest standards, with a more mature feel than the Stussy of old. There's some key garments this season, seersucker reigns supreme.

kolor-lead
SLAMXHYPE #2 PICK: KOLOR

Slamxhype Says: Kolor manages to mix traditional menswear with tomorrow's sportswear better than anyone.. From Blazers to Wind Jackets, always the most luxurious materials and best cuts. Expensive, but the wind jacket alone is deserving of a top 5 spot.
Complex says: This misses the Complex audience as a complete collection. There are maybe one or two pieces that we could work with, but it's a bit too avant garde for us..

nom-de-lead
COMPLEX #2 PICK: NOM DE GUERRE

Complex Says: Nom has had us covered consistently when we needed to clean up. They're always forward-thinking and their store has always opened our eyes to what's next in the fashion world.
Slamxhype Says: Great denim, great styling, Nom De Guerre's ability to style their collections with a solid theme in mind, sets them apart from the rest. Love the knitwear this season..

new-power-studio

SLAMXHYPE #1 PICK: NEW POWER STUDIO

Slamxhype Says: Function is about comfort, 'future thinking fashion' for me is based on creating new function and new ways to construct garments. New Power Studio, bring a luxurious feel and a futuristic aesthetic to sportswear and fashion. One of the most talked about brands of this year, and it's easy to see why. You can wear fleece pants everyday and still be far and beyond all fashion heads.
Complex Says: We're not going to front, but we're not too familiar about this brand. Perhaps it hasn't picked up as much steam in the states yet. We can definitely rock with some of the pieces, but as a full collection, we're not totally convinced yet. We'll keep them on our radar.

ransom-image
COMPLEX #1 PICK: RANSOM

Complex Says: Matt George runs the north, and his new collections deliver every season. Everything from the five-panel hats to the t-shirts, to the standout blue parka jacket is sick. We can't wait for their new footwear line with adidas to drop this fall.
Slamxhype Says: Of any retailer that has launched their store brand into a brand on its own, Ransom is probably the best. The quality and production seems far and beyond most streetwear brands today, matched with a classic aesthetic, Ransom has a huge future ahead of it.
