With his signing to the Brooklyn Nets pretty much official now, Kevin Durant will embark on this next chapter of his NBA career with a new number.

Durant explained his journey with the No. 35 on the Instagram account for his business Thirty Five Ventures before announcing that the next time he is seen in a Nets jersey, he will be wearing No. 7.

It's not entirely clear why Durant has chosen No. 7. He was also seen wearing the Compound '7' Signature Snapback during the Golden State Warriors' playoff run this past season.

Did Durant grow to like the number while wearing the cap? Did KD have his mind already made up, and he was working on some low-key rebranding? Is there another reason that we're missing? We will most likely get that answer in the future. What we do know is that his commitment to the new number is very real. KD made this announcement on July 7, or 7/7, at 7 p.m.

Aside from people wondering about the number's origins, there's also some considerable backlash from those who can't get over his decision to wear the same number Carmelo Anthony switched to when he joined the New York Knicks

So he's tryna be the new Melo in NY? I'm confused

Others can't get over Durant wearing Nets' No. 7 jersey made famous by Joe Johnson.

Kevin Durant may be changing his number, but real Nets fans know the only true #7 is seven-time All-Star and future Hall of Famer Joe Johnson. pic.twitter.com/fdYPj3EzZ4
