When you're in the NFL (or, really, any major professional sport) public perception of you is based almost entirely around wins, losses, and championships. And by that we mean that, if the Cleveland Browns did this (and publicized it) then there might be a high chance they'd be mocked. But since the New England Patriots did it then it's probably pretty genius.
Oh, did I forget to mention what we're even talking about? Well, according to the Boston Globe, the Patriots have tapped a martial arts expert to help the team get pressure on opposing quarterbacks this year. That martial arts expert (Joe Kim) will serve as a pass rushing consultant for the 2018 season. The fact that we mentioned the Browns above is not coincidental, as Kim has previously been a consultant for 10 other NFL teams, including Cleveland, as recently as 2016.
In fact, though he was on the Browns' staff just a few years ago, Kim was actually given his first NFL job by current Pats coach Bill Belichick back in 1992, when Belichick was a second-year head coach of the Browns.
Kim will reportedly be working with defensive line coach Brendan Daly and will focus on upping the hand-to-hand combat skills of defenders.
Interesting.
