Joel Embiid was finally given the green light to play in Game 3 of the first-round series between the Philadelphia 76ers and Miami Heat. Embiid returned on Thursday after suffering an orbital bone fracture last month wearing a unique mask that had goggles built into them. Before tip-off, Rebecca Haarlow broke down the specifics of the mask.
Below is a transcript of Haarlow's comments, courtesy of SB Nation:
“There are just two of [these masks]. It took them 20 iterations to get to this one,” she noted. “A couple of things: This is incredibly light. Now you see it’s a little big darker in color, that’s a carbon, which makes it even stronger than plastic. And then interestingly enough, there’s a cover over the eyes. That’s to protect the orbital bone. So the Sixers are confident that there’s no way he can go out there and re-injure the eye. But you’ve got to wonder how comfortable it will be to play with this all night long.”
Amid a report from the Philly Inquirer which claimed that a “forceful blow to the orbital bone could even permanently damage the sight in his left eye,” it’s crucial that the 76ers took every necessary precaution to ensure the future of their cornerstone big man. But yeah, Twitter users didn’t care about all that. They just wanted to get their jokes off, speculating where they have seen Embiid’s mask before.
