Don Cherry Denies Climate Change During ‘Hockey Night in Canada’ Rant

The beloved hockey commentator served some hot takes.

One of Canada's most problematic faves served some very hot takes this weekend. At the top of his Coaches Corner segment during last night's Hockey Night in Canada broadcast, Don Cherry delivered a bizarre rant in which he denied climate change and called out left-wing "cuckaloos" for believing in it. Co-host Ron Maclean, who was noticeably uncomfortable, tried to quickly move past the comments and continue the regularly scheduled programming.

Before ending his intro on Coaches Corner, which airs every Saturday between the first and second periods of nationally syndicated hockey games, Cherry laid into Maclean. “I’m just asking you, the cuckaloos are always saying there are warming trends. We’re freezing to death," he said. This is a frequent tidbit used by detractors despite overwhelming evidence showing that extreme weather (both cold and hot) is a direct result of climate change.

Canada's Environment Minister, Catherine McKenna, quickly took to Twitter to shut down Cherry. "For hockey you can turn to Coach's Corner if you want," she began. "For climate change, Canadians turn to scientists. But Don Cherry might want to think about all those kids who might not have outdoor rinks to play on some day."

This is of course, not the first time Don Cherry has used his platform for other wild statements. In November 2016, the octogenarian shamed Americans looking to escape President Trump by moving to Canada. "The left wing kook entertainers and the left wing weirdo’s in the media in the US have said if Trump wins the presidency they will move to Canada," he said in a Tweet. "Please, we have enough of these type here now."

You can watch a video grab of Saturday's Coaches Corner above. In the meantime, let's hope Don sticks to hockey commentating before he completely tarnishes his legacy.
