It’s been quite the Monday morning for Tom Brady. Between ending his weekly radio interview early after a WEEI host dissed his 5-year-old daughter and catching a flight to Minneapolis for the Patriots’ Super Bowl LII matchup against the Eagles, Brady has been a busy man.
But the Patriots quarterback didn’t allow the craziness to stop him from making an appearance at his team's Super Bowl pep rally outside of Gillette Stadium just before New England took off for Minnesota. In fact, he managed to add to the craziness by punctuating his appearance with a mic drop that sent Patriots Nation into a frenzy.
Brady grabbed the mic at the pep rally and told those in attendance that he and the Patriots are planning to go to Super Bowl LII, win their game against the Eagles, and bring the Patriots’ sixth Lombardi Trophy back to Foxborough. He then yelled, "We love you—Patriots out!" before lifting the mic above his head, dropping it, and walking off the stage as it fell to the ground.
Brady's was the latest in a long line of mic drops that have set the internet aflame in recent years. On the night he played his last NBA game, Kobe Bryant addressed the crowd at the Staples Center and punctuated it with one final "Mamba out!" before dropping the mic and strutting off the court.
A few weeks later, former President Barack Obama channeled his inner Kobe by nailing a mic drop of his own. "Obama out!" Obama said, before dropping the mic at the end of his speech at the White House Correspondents Dinner.
Brady was clearly inspired by his famous predecessors, which was not lost on the internet.
But was Brady’s mic drop really on that level?
If you’re a Pats fan, then the only acceptable answer is "hell yes." New England acolytes were appopriately hyped after Brady’s contribution to the mic drop canon, with many of them predicting a victory for the Patriots based on the mic drop alone.
But not everyone thought Brady’s entry was worthy of entering the mic drop hall of fame. This guy said he’s seen his pastor perform better mic drops.
This guy called Brady’s mic drop "trash."
This guy called Brady "such a dork."
And this guy, well, something tells us he would have hated just about anything Brady did on Monday morning, including the mic drop.
But this fan may have brought up the most valid point of all. The best part of a mic drop is watching the mic actually hit the ground. But Brady’s unorthodox mic dropping style led to the mic falling outside of the frame as Pats fans at home watched the pep rally on TV. The amateur sleuth even called for an investigation into whether a mic drop even officially took place. Do we have a mic drop-gate on our hands?
Whether you liked the mic drop or not, the fact that Brady is already this fired up with a week to go until the big game can't be good news for the Eagles, right? Sunday night can’t get here soon enough.
