Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey was arrested on a third-degree robbery charge this week in Tuscaloosa, Alabama; however, the NFL rookie insists the incident was simply a misunderstanding.
According to AL.com, University of Alabama police took Humphrey into custody Thursday after he was accused of stealing a $15 phone charger on Jan. 13 at the Hotel Capstone on Alabama's campus. The publication points out the third-degree robbery charge, which is a Class C felony in the state, is listed on sheriff’s booking information; however, the incident report lists the charge as a fourth-degree misdemeanor theft. The report also lists a harassment offense, which might explain the amended charge.
According to the Alabama criminal code, third-degree robbery occurs when the suspect “uses force against the person of the owner of the property or any person present with intent to overcome that person's physical resistance or physical power of resistance; or (2) he/she threatens the imminent use of force against the person of the owner of the property or any person present with intent to compel acquiescence to the taking of or escaping with the property.”
The incident report states Humphrey and three women were taking an Uber when the athlete asked the driver if he could borrow his phone charger. Once the vehicle arrived at their destination, Humphrey allegedly refused to give the charger back and also grabbed other cables inside the vehicle before he got out. When the driver attempted to recover his belongings, the cornerback allegedly elbowed him on the side and put up his fist as if he was ready to fight.
The alleged victim then alerted authorities, who spoke to Humphrey inside the hotel. Officers said the athlete claimed the charger was his, but they ended up taking it from him after the realized it didn’t fit his phone.
The Baltimore Ravens announced they were "monitoring the situation" in the following statement Thursday:
