Shortly after scoring an 83-yard touchdown for the 49ers during the first quarter of their 31-21 win against the Giants on Sunday afternoon, Marquise Goodwin dropped down to his knees and appeared to be overcome with emotion as he celebrated San Francisco’s longest play from scrimmage on the season. But as it turns out, his emotions didn’t have anything to do with football or the play he had just made on the field.

Prior to the start of the game, Goodwin posted a somewhat cryptic message on Instagram that suggested he was dealing with a personal issue of some sort.

And after the game, he revealed what it was. Just hours before taking the field to play against the Giants, Goodwin and his wife lost their newborn son due to complications that she experienced during her pregnancy. Goodwin shared the news in a heartbreaking IG post that detailed what the couple went through over the weekend.

"Unfortunately, we lost our baby boy to some complications," he wrote, "and had to prematurely deliver him early this morning around 4am. Although we are hurt, I am grateful for the experience and grateful that God blessed me with a wife as courageous and resilient as Morgan. The pain (physical, mentally, and emotionally) that she has endured is unbelievable. Please Pray for the Goodwin family."

Considering the circumstances, it’s amazing that Goodwin played on Sunday and more amazing that he played as well as he did. He didn’t speak with reporters after the game, but given all that was going on, that’s to be expected. The 49ers have their bye this week and won’t practice again until next Monday.
