Conor McGregor’s coach John Kavanagh has kept his name in the news over the course of the last couple weeks by talking about the possibility of his client fighting Floyd Mayweather. He started things off by trolling all of his Twitter followers with this tweet on April Fool’s Day:
And he kept it going a few days later by talking about how McGregor is already training for his boxing match with Mayweather. The fight might not be on yet, but that hasn’t stopped Kavanagh from promoting the hell out of it already.
During a Q&A with fans in Australia earlier this week, Kavanagh stayed at it by taking a few shots at Mayweather and his character. He was asked for his opinion on Mayweather, and he said that he doesn’t think very highly of him.
"I do think Floyd Mayweather is pretty much a dirtbag," Kavanagh said, before referencing the domestic violence allegations that have been made against the boxer in the past. "He’s beat up his girlfriends. I’ve watched [clips from Mayweather’s boxing gym]The Dog House. He just strikes me as a real bully-type character. He makes these guys fight each other endless rounds until one is badly hurt. He’s just not a good individual."
Kavanagh also spoke about how Floyd Mayweather Sr. once said he would beat him up. He’s not sure why Mayweather’s dad said it.
"His dad says he’s going to knock me out for some reason," he said. "I don’t know why."
And then Kavanagh went back to tearing Mayweather down while trying to build his own fighter up.
"I’m a fan of his skills, but as a human being, the way he runs his gym, the way he carries himself—I mean, it is a little bit of an exchange of styles like that, so we’ll see what happens," he said. "[McGregor is] already pretty much a legend in Ireland folklore at this stage. But to do that [fight Mayweather]—what can I do except tip my hat to him that he’s embracing this challenge? He wants to fight one of the best boxers of all time."
No word yet on what Mayweather has to say in response to all of this. But if this potential fight needed even more bulletin board material, it just got some.
