Imagine spending four looooooong years preparing to pole vault at the Olympics. Imagine missing out on holidays, birthdays, and other special events as you sacrifice all of your time and effort to train. Imagine doing everything in your power to make sure you’re as ready as you can possibly be as you descend upon Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to compete in the pole vault against other world-class athletes. And then, imagine missing out on the opportunity to advance beyond the qualifying round of the Rio Olympics because of…your penis?

Ouch.

That’s what happened to Japanese pole vaulter Hiroki Ogita on Saturday. He was attempting to clear a bar set at 17.3 feet when his leg touched the bar and caused it to start to wobble. Fortunately, he was able to gather himself enough to prevent the bar from falling off completely, which would have been an automatic foul, but as he cleared the bar, he was unable to prevent his penis from coming into direct contact with the bar. It hit the bar and caused it to fall, which earned Ogita a foul and essentially knocked him out of Olympic competition. He was able to clear the bar on his second attempt (we wonder what adjustments he made prior to that jump—er, on second thought, maybe not), but it wasn’t enough for Ogita to advance to the next round.

You can check out the failed jump above. What an absolutely horrible way to end four long years of intense preparation.
