We expected some controversial statements (like this one) to come out of the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Ohio this week, but we didn’t expect them to come from former college football coach Lou Holtz. Holtz is popping up in headlines on Tuesday, though, thanks to some comments that he made during a luncheon for the Republican National Coalition for Life.
The Donald Trump supporter actually started making waves late Monday when he inexplicably showed up at the RNC carrying a bottle of Crown Royal:
And while that was sort of funny, the remarks he made during the luncheon were not. Holtz referred to the number of immigrants currently entering the U.S. as an "invasion," according to TheDaily Beast reporter Betsy Woodruff. He also said that he believes immigrants need to learn to speak English and “become us” if they plan on staying in America. Additionally, he said, "I don't want to become you," while speaking about immigrants and even took a shot at the entire sport of soccer as people in attendance at the luncheon applauded him:
At one point, Holtz also cracked a joke about the violence that has plagued the city of Chicago in recent years by saying that he feels safer in places like Iraq and Afghanistan:
