The prospective 'Fight of the Year' just moved a step closer to reality.

Chris Eubank Jr's somewhat surprising quest to face off against the most devastating boxer on the planet – Gennady Golovkin – is close to being sealed, according to Eubank Jr's promoter Eddie Hearn.

After 11 days of negotiations, Hearn told the Daily Mail that Eubank Jr is about to sign a £3 million contract to land the fight this week:

"It is very close to being made. We had a positive meeting with Sky and the major details are nearly all agreed. We still have stuff to discuss but I expect both sides to sign by the end of this weekend.

Gennady Golovkin has won all 35 of his fights with 32 KOs.

Golovkin currently holds the WBC, WBA Super and IBF middleweight titles, while Eubank Jr is the current British middleweight champion. His only loss came to Billy Joe Saunders – the current WBA title holder – in November 2014.

In the United States, Golovkin has been built to be the man who can claim Floyd Mayweather Jr's crown as the biggest box office draw in boxing. If Eubank Jr does secure this fight, it's a huge deal.
