The mother of 19-year-old high school football player Deston Garrett is claiming her son was shot and killed by a friend because of a dispute over a YouTube music video.

On the evening of June 9, Garrett showed his friend Fredrick Marshall, 23, all the views he had racked up on a YouTube music video he had made at his family's Sacramento home. An argument ensued, and Deston asked Fredrick to leave the residence. That's when Marshall allegedly shot Garrett and fled the scene. Garrett was rushed to the hospital with a gunshot wound to his torso and died two days later.

Marshall would frequently visit the Garrett family home, according to Deston's parents Tanya and Jay. "You come in and destroy my home like that," Tanya Sacramento told news station FOX40. "After I fed you, and I've clothed you—I mean, we just went camping a few weeks ago."

On Friday, friends and family attended a memorial service where they remembered the young man many referred to as "Nutter." That same day, Marshall was booked on a suspicion of voluntary manslaughter charge. He is being held on $100,000 bail.

Garrett attended Sacramento Charter High School until January. He was attending Sacramento City Unified School District’s Accelerated Academy and was set to graduate around the time of his death. "It's like, you open your door to the devil and you let him in," Tanya said. "That's what I feel like I did."
