MMA Fighter Emanuel Newton Says He Lost His Last Fight Because He Had Sex a Few Hours Before It

Doesn’t he know that having sex right before a fight is a big no-no?

Having a lot of sex in the weeks and days leading up to a fight has worked for MMA fighters like Conor McGregor and Ronda Rousey in the past. But apparently, it didn’t work for MMA fighter Emanuel Newton before a fight that took place back in September.

Newton claims he had sex a few hours (yes, hours) before fighting Phil Davis at a Bellator event. The result? A first-round submission loss that he blames largely on the sex he had.

“I had sex like three or four hours before the fight, which was stupid,” he told MMAjunkie.com this week. “Once again, I was getting caught up in that [mentality that] certain things couldn’t touch me when I have to understand that I am human and I do have to train hard and I can’t be going out and making stupid mistakes.”

According to Newton, Davis was able to injure one of his ribs almost immediately because he didn’t have any power in his hips. He believes he lost the power during his pre-fight romp.

“[Having sex] definitely took away my hips,” he said. “My trainer Antonio [McKee], even the day before when we were doing the open workouts, I was kicking him off his feet with spinning back kicks. The first takedown Phil got on me was when I threw a spinning back kick and he powered through it and he got that body lock and that’s when I popped my rib. But right when we were warming up, my trainer looked at me and said, ‘What happened to that power?’ Lesson learned.”

Lesson learned indeed. Having sex a few days before a fight might not be the worst thing in the world (hey, if it works for McGregor and Rousey, why not?). But having sex on the day of a fight? Probably not a great idea.
