On Wednesday morning, Carmelo Anthony’s teammate Cleanthony Earlywas shot in the knee and robbed while leaving a strip club in New York City. Fortunately, it sounds like he’s going to be OK and might even be able to return to the court before the end of the 2015-16 NBA season. But during an interview with reporters yesterday, Carmelo talked at length about how Early’s shooting shows—once again—that America needs to do something about gun control in this country.

Carmelo readily admits that he doesn’t know exactly what needs to be done, but he talked at length about the issue and said that some steps have to be taken sooner than later with regards to guns and who has them.

“I mean, we got to do something,” he said. “I mean, you feel it. I felt it in Baltimore, in that situation, the Freddie Gray situation, and I’m feeling it now with a teammate of mine that’s much closer. It’s just something that we have to do. We’ve got to figure it out. I don’t know how we figure it out. I don’t have the answers. I’m pretty sure a lot of people are working on trying to figure that out. But we have to do something.”

Early posted this message to his fans on Instagram earlier today and alluded to the fact that he believes he actually “dodged a bullet” despite getting shot:

But Carmelo is right. Something does need to happen—and Early’s shooting is just the latest example of that. If you’re interested in hearing Carmelo talk about gun control, it’s towards the end of the video above.
