When Oscar Pistoriuswas sentenced to five years in prison last year for shooting and killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in early 2013, the general consensus was that he got off way too easy. But as it turns out, Pistorius is going to get off even easier than most people originally expected.

According to reports out of South Africa, Pistorius—who claimed he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder before he shot and killed her on Valentine's Day 2013—is scheduled to be released from prison on Friday. That means that, after being found guilty of culpable homicide, he will have served just 10 months of his five-year sentence.

CNNis reporting that Pistorius is getting out early because of the fact that many South African prisons are overpopulated. They are also reporting that Pistorius is going to be required to serve the remainder of his sentence at a home owned by his uncle and wear an electronic monitoring device. But still, just 10 months in prison doesn't sound like much of a punishment at all, which is why Steenkamp's family is currently petitioning to keep him behind bars.
