The Associated Press conducted an investigation of the waters in venues where swimming and boating athletes will compete in the 2016 Olympics, and the results are all kinds of disgusting.

The article which details the findings says that these waters "are rife with human sewage and present a serious health risk for athletes," as well as to those visiting the beaches in Rio de Janeiro.

Athletes who have been training in Rio for the competition have already become ill, and experienced symptoms which include "fevers, vomiting and diarrhea."

It's unclear whether or not this is something that can be completely cleaned up in time for next summer's games. The AP's testing, which was conducted over a five-month period, didn't find a single venue fit for swimming or boating. Additionally, the piece points out that in Brazil's urban areas, most sewage isn't even collected, much less treated.

It looks like the 2016 Olympics are shaping up to be a real shit show.
