This is a story that's been brewing for more than a month but today it's become official, Paul Pierce has opted out of the final year of his current contract with the Washington Wizards and will now be a free agent according to...Paul Pierce:

While the Wizards can still re-sign the 17-year-vet, the smart bet appears to be on Pierce swapping coasts to the Clippers to reunite with former coach Doc Rivers. The only thing that would prevent that is the same thing that apparently stopped it last year, money. The Clippers are reportedly scraping against the salary cap so it remains to be seen whether or not they'll be able to fit Pierce into their budget.
