Gregg Popovich Has No Interest In Staying Up to Woo Free Agents

The Spurs coach won't be staying up tonight to get an early start on free agency.

In a very short time (as in 12:01 A.M.) NBA free agency will be beginning, and many GMs, coaches, and superstars are sure to be ready to make their initial pitches to the missing piece that could bring their team a trophy, a parade, and various other goodies that go with being the last team standing. It's a feeding frenzy, and it never hurts to show a baller how much you care by being the first person to contact them.

But one coach (and possibly only one coach) who has already made it clear that he will not be staying up past midnight is none other than the Spurs' Gregg Popovich. Sounding like a 66-year-old man reasonable human being, Popovich told the San Antonio Express-News yesterday:

"I'm not calling anyone at midnight. I'll be in bed. And if that's the difference in someone coming or not coming, then I don't want them."

It's tough to question the tactics of a five-time NBA champ and (if anything) we find this refreshing in a world where Kobe Bryant and Jamie Foxx are being used to recruit DeAndre Jordan for two teams in just one damn city. This is to say nothing of how frequently coaches hassle high schoolers to get a commitment at the amateur level.

Pop has got his priorities straight. Get some freakin' rest, man. It's vital. After all, isn't this supposed to be the offseason?
