Sorry, people of NepalCristiano Ronaldo isn't your saviour after all.

The Real Madrid superstar's stock rose in the eyes of the public after he was reported to have donated £5 million (€7 million) to Save the Children, who are helping with the rescue efforts following a devastating sequence of earthquakes in Nepal.

The story first appeared in French football magazine So Foot and the world's media ran with it. The Nepal earthquake killed at least 8,000 people and injured 20,000 more.

Save the Children say they haven't received a donation from Ronaldo.

Speaking to BuzzFeed News, a Save the Children ambassador said:

“The recent report of Ronaldo’s contribution towards Save the Children’s Nepal earthquake relief efforts is untrue.”

But Ronaldo has made appeals for donations to funds helping Nepal on his Facebook page and judging by his previous form, this moment of charity wouldn't have been totally out of character.

Last year he paid for €60,000 worth of treatments for a seriously ill 10-month-old boy and also sponsored the shirts of his cash-strapped hometown club so they could survive for another season.

The only way this could get worse for CR7 is if long-time rival Lionel Messi stole the headlines and made a huge donation to the cause himself.
