Through the first three seasons of his NFL career, Russell Wilson has won one Super Bowl and come within a yard of winning another. So there's no way the Seahawks are going to let him go and sign with another team after his rookie contract runs out after next season, right? Er, right?!

You wouldn't think. But earlier today, Seahawks general manager John Schneider made an appearance on KIRO radio in Seattle and was asked about why the team hasn't re-signed Wilson yet. And he admitted that, while the team would obviously love to keep him for the foreseeable future, they're not going to do it if it means overpaying him.

"Every negotiation is unique in and of itself and this is no different," Schneider said. "Ultimate team sport, he's our quarterback, we'd love him to be our quarterback. But the thing is, we need to keep as many of these guys together as we possibly can."

Before Seahawks fans get too worked up, it's important to remember that the Seahawks and Wilson are in the middle of a tough negotiation right now. So Schneider was likely just using his airtime to his advantage here. But this still seems like a weird strategy for the Seahawks to take. Because if they want to try and convince Wilson to sign a contract this offseason, telling him that he's expendable probably isn't the way to do it.

Stay tuned to see if Wilson signs an extension with Seattle this offseason or if he lets next season play out before signing a new deal, either with the Seahawks or some other team.
