When you get a power play in hockey, it’s supposed to give you an edge in scoring goals. And in a way, that’s exactly what happened last night to the Calgary Flames in the first period of their 3-2 loss to the Vancouver Canucks.

The only problem is, the goal they scored on the power play happened to be on their own net.

The Flames had pulled their goalie when they saw they were going to end up on the power play, bringing on an extra skater due to the delayed penalty call. Unfortunately, they didn’t quite set up their attack right.

A pass from Dennis Wideman caromed off the boards and hurtled all the way back down the ice into the Flames’ own net. The men on the ice could do nothing but watch helplessly as their losing streak reached eight games, and in doing so the team somehow managed to reach a new level of futility.
