Three years ago the Washington Redskins opted to trade three first-round picks and a second rounder in order to acquire the second choice of the 2012 NFL Draft that they would use to select Heisman winner Robert Griffin III. And, while that initially looked like a great understandable move with a division championship delivered as a rookie, it now looks more and more like a choice that could setback Washington for the foreseeable future. This week it continues to look like a suspect trade with reports that Head Coach Jay Gruden will bench RGIII this Sunday to give Colt McCoy a chance under center against the Colts.

Still, in the same report that cites McCoy as this week's starter (which will be made official tomorrow morning in a press conference), it also said that this move shouldn't be seen as an indication that the Redskins are giving up on their former first rounder. The Redskins are "optimistic" about their future following this season due in part to the fact that they'll finally have their full stock of draft picks this year and plan to spend big money in free agency. They're also confident that Gruden's past success with quarterbacks (like Andy Dalton, we guess) will allow him to resurrect Griffin into the Pro Bowler/Offensive Rookie of the Year he was in 2012.

If you're a Washington fan, feel free to buy into the franchise's spin at your own risk.
